Frosty Mornings & Cozy Train Rides: My Love for Home Organization and Sustainable Living

A cold, organized home office in Oslo with shelves on the wall and repurposed jars.

As I write this nestled cozily amidst warm layers on my daily train ride to Oslo, the serene snowy landscape whisking past my window belies the bubbling excitement within me. With a hint of frost in the air and the temperature flirting at a nippy -3°C, it's a wonderful day to delve into my favourite topic - home organization hacks. I firmly believe that a well-organized space is the pivot to a concise and clear mind, allowing creativity and positivity to flourish.

Now, before you groan at the thought of toil and trouble, let me assure you, it's all about small tweaks and changes that culminate into transformative results.

Moving onto the heart of the matter, my first hack and something I personally swear by, is the concept of ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. Be it your unwieldy collection of scarves or that ever-growing mound of books, assign a specific spot for every single item in your house. This trick alone sieves out clutter, guarantees easy access to your belongings and breathes an air of tranquillity into your home. Remember, as your mother may have recited, organization is the key to efficiency.

An effective counter to the space crunch dilemma in many homes is exploiting vertical spaces. Shelves, vertical shoe racks, over-the-door organizers or simply hooks on the wall, the possibilities are endless. This not only induces a sense of order but also contributes to a visually appealing setup.

In today's information age, digitize! Yes, where possible, try to maintain digital files instead of hard copies. Reducing the amount of physical paperwork can significantly declutter your space and moreover, this approach aligns beautifully with our responsibility towards sustainable practices.

In the spirit of sustainability, I’m reminded of the latest updates on the COP26 meeting in Glasgow that I read today. While the adversities faced by developing nations are given due importance, the mention of reducing coal and fossil fuels calls us to reflect on our contribution. Isn’t it true that every small initiative on our part to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle can drive significant change?

Living sustainably can intertwine wonderfully with home organizing. A kitchen hack I adore involves re-purposing glass jars as storage containers. Not only does it curtail the use of plastic, but this eco-friendly solution also creates a unique aesthetic appeal. Trust me, there's nothing more rewarding than visually attractive, sustainable solutions that bring order to your life!

On a similar vein, stray away from the allure of consumerism. When faced with the question to buy or not to buy, opt the minimalist way. By consciously curating what we bring into our homes, we create less waste, spend less, and coexist better with our environment.

As I wrap up this blog post, the sparkling snowflakes descending gently against the window completes the perfect backdrop for a pensive end. Through simple organization hacks, we can not only bring order to chaos but also contribute to the monumental task of preserving our beautiful planet. And what’s more? We’ll enjoy the process! As Eleanor Brownn aptly put, “Clutter is not just the stuff on the floor, it’s anything that stands between you and the life you want to be living”. So, let’s declutter and organize! For our homes, for ourselves, and for our planet.
