Redefining Influence: A Quest for Authenticity in the Age of Social Media Role Models
A chilly morning, with Oslo gracing us with a mere 17 degrees Celsius, finds me tapping away on my keyboard on the train to university. The dull grey weather reflecting my mood, one can't help but feel a little downtrodden.
Having just set aside a blank news article - a daunting reminder of how shallow our society can often be - I am forced to turn my attention to a topic that continues to provoke thought: role models and influencers. Accepting the inevitability of my own cynicism, I am compelled to ponder on what those words mean in today's society.
So here we are, in an era where the lines between reality and virtuality are getting blurry. We bestow upon strangers the ability to mirror our aspirations, dreams, jokes, discussions, fears even. Total strangers harness the power to be someone who inspires, embodies ambitions, leads people and sets trends. Isn't it marvellous? Or is it?
Role models. The word itself is heavy - laden with ideals that undoubtedly leave reverberations. A role model should teach us, inspire us, enhance us. But more often than not, it seems that in the pursuit of recognition and approval, the essence of this term has lost its sheen. We applaud the glimmering facade, but what about the spirit within?
Influencers. The term suggests power, dominance. And yet, one cannot aid but feel downtrodden at how trivial and shallow it has become in today's digital age. Conspiring numbers, contrived snapshots of happiness... Do they honestly bear any weight or do they, too, just disappear within the labyrinth of pixels?
Do we choose these social simulators because of their wisdom, their resilience, their values? Or are they merely a product of social algorithms, framed faces in tinted hues and an array of well-rehearsed lines? What is the profound undercurrent of influence they impart, aside from the artfully arranged brunches and the delicately balanced aesthetic of their profiles?
Do these curated realities really deserve our time, our admiration, our worship? Stripped bare of filters, algorithms, and facades, can our sanctified role models reside in the hallowed halls of our aspirations? Maybe it's high time we re-evaluate the qualities we deem influential. Intelligence, compassion, resilience... these should not be mere filler words in an Instagram bio.
These questions weigh heavy on an already dreary day. The train rattles on, indifferent to my philosophical musings, as I delve deeper into the void of my thoughts...
Perhaps it's time to reimagine the paradigm of influence. To look beyond the perfectly packaged social media profiles and carefully constructed allure. To seek truth, authenticity, substance, in a world where these elements are becoming a rarity. Maybe the real influencers, the real role models, are those who, away from the limelight, continue to inspire, to persevere, to create.
As the fog of my thoughts begins to clear, I realise how very little I know and how much more there is to learn. Amidst the grey tones outside and the rhythm of the train, I'm left pondering... isn't this what role models and influencers should incite? A thirst for knowledge, a hunger for betterment, a yearning to think, to question, to grow?
The journey continues to university, the tapping on the keyboard is momentarily silenced. Downtrodden? Perhaps. But also resolute. Resolute in my quest to seek more meaningful conversations, more profound connections, and redefine the blurred lines of 'role models' and 'influencers' for myself.
