From what I have read, morning workouts are supposedly more effective because the exercise speeds up your metabolism, which you take advantage of throughout the day.  Night exercise does not get the same benefit because when you fall asleep, your metabolism shifts into "sleep" mode.

This is from various articles over the years but I don't know how scientifically backed they are.

Recently, I have started doing a lot more high intensity interval training and I highly recommend it over normal steady pace exercise.  For me, it has been much more efficient in terms of time invested vs. results obtained.</description>
